It is with sadness that the SMA shares news of the passing of two distinguished and hugely influential figures in music theory and analysis in late May 2026, Carl Schachter and Arnold Whittall.
Carl Schachter was a distinguished music theorist, teacher, and scholar whose work shaped generations of musicians and analysts. Schachter devoted his life to the study and teaching of music theory, becoming one of the foremost interpreters of the Schenkerian tradition. Through decades of teaching, writing, and mentorship, he helped transform the way musicians understand tonal structure, voice leading, and musical expression. He leaves a lasting legacy as a researcher and a pedagogue.
Arnold Whittall was a distinguished British musicologist, music analyst, and writer whose scholarship illuminated the complexities of twentieth-century music for generations of students, performers, and readers. He was renowned for his work on modernist composers including Schoenberg, Webern, and Britten, and he combined uncompromising intellectual rigor with exceptional clarity and humanity. He was a founding member of the Society for Music Analysis and the journal Music Analysis, and his work was therefore instrumental in shaping and nurturing analytical activity in the UK.
For many years Professor of Music Theory and Analysis at King’s College London, he was a deeply influential teacher and an eloquent advocate for contemporary music. His books and essays helped shape the study of modern composition in Britain and beyond, bringing insight, balance, and sensitivity to some of the most challenging repertoire of the last century.
Colleagues and students will remember Arnold Whittall not only for his formidable scholarship, but also for his generosity, modesty, and sharp wit. His contribution to musical understanding and education leaves a lasting legacy.
