In 2023, the SMA published a report on the representation of music analysis in UK undergraduate curricula (Donn and Pace 2023). The report examined the analysis provision available on undergraduate programmes in each of the four UK regions as well as in different parts of the HE sector (Russell Group, Mid-ranking, etc.). The report identified striking differences in the provision available in different parts of the HE music sector, with the majority of analysis provision concentrated within Russell Group universities and a small number of other institutions.
This event is inspired by Donn and Pace’s 2023 report and is designed to follow on from a previous online panel event entitled ‘Analysis: Then and Now’ which was held in June 2025. This event will follow the same format as the previous online panel, featuring four speakers drawn from the Russell Group, Mid-ranking, Post-1992 and conservatoire sections of the HE music sector, respectively. While the first panel event focused on discussing changes which have occurred within the HE music sector over the last several decades, this event will focus on current challenges facing the sector in relation to score-based music literacy and consider what the implications of these might be for tertiary-level music curricula in the future. Some participants will provide examples of specific initiatives currently in place at their own institutions which are designed to support students in the area of score-based music literacy, while others will reflect on the challenges and issues under discussion more broadly. We hope that this event will provide helpful examples of initiatives which have the potential to inspire similar initiatives elsewhere, as well as assisting attendees in considering some of the fundamental questions surrounding the current and future place of score-based music analysis within the UK HE music sector.
The event will be chaired by SMA student representative Rebekah Donn and the four speakers will be:
Dr James Cook (University of Edinburgh)
Dr Rachael Durkin (Northumbria University)
Dr Annika Forkert (Royal Northern College of Music)
Prof. Ian Pace (City St. George’s, University of London)
