Book: Anne M. Hyland, Schubert’s String Quartets: The Teleology of Lyric Form (Cambridge: CUP, 2023).
Commentators: Steven Vande Moortele, Markus Böggemann
Moderator: Lorraine Byrne Bodley

The symposium will focus on Dr Anne Hyland’s recent book, Schubert’s String Quartets: The Teleology of Lyric Form (Cambridge: CUP, 2023), and will feature discussion with three of the most esteemed international scholars in Schubert research, and music theory and analysis: Lorraine Byrne Bodley, Steven Vande Moortele, and Markus Böggemann. This promises to be a spirited and thought-provoking session (my own contributions notwithstanding), offering insights into Schubert’s quartet writing, lyricism, and formal processes. The event is free and open to all.
Dr Anne Hyland is Senior Lecturer in Music Analysis at The University of Manchester. She was awarded the SMA’s Anthony Pople Mid-Career Research Award 2024 for her outstanding work on form and temporality in Schubert’s instrumental music in her book Schubert’s String Quartets. Anne has also published a wide range of journal articles and book chapters on Schubert’s music.
