Dear all,
Following the success of our Beethoven study day in November 2018, the Formal Theory Study Group
(FTSG) invites postgraduates and early career researchers to attend our upcoming workshop on
‘Mendelssohn’s Chamber Music and the Pursuit of a Romantic Formenlehre’ with Dr Benedict
Taylor (University of Edinburgh), hosted at the University of Edinburgh on Saturday 9th February
2019. The workshop will run from 11am to 5pm. It aims to not only provide a space in which to explore
together the latest developments in theorising Romantic form through Mendelssohn’s music, but also an
opportunity to meet other musicologists at the start of their careers.
The workshop will consist of a mixture of seminar and workshop throughout the day. We will look at
Mendelssohn’s Quartets Op. 44, no. 1 (first movement), Op. 44 no. 2 (Scherzo), and Op. 44 no. 3
(Scherzo), as well as his Cello Sonata Op. 45 (first and third movements) in detail. In advance of our
meeting, we will read three analytical chapters from the forthcoming edited volume Rethinking
Mendelssohn. PDFs of the chapters will be sent after the registration deadline .
There are a number of travel bursaries available for SMA members and the workshop itself is completely
free. Please register your interest and indicate whether you would like to apply for a travel bursary by
emailing smaftsg@gmail.com. The deadline for both registration and bursary application is 18th
January. Please note that you will have to send in a separate bursary application to the SMA,
visit https://www.sma.ac.uk/grants/travel/ for more details.
Please feel free to email us at smtftsg@gmail.com should you have any enquiries. We look forward to
meeting you in February!
Best wishes,
The FTSG Committee
