“But what about the music? Negotiating the sonic and the social in a history of the string quartet”
My recent research explores the string quartet since the mid twentieth century, focusing on the values and practices of the ensemble from a variety of perspectives that cut across the sonic and social (repertoire, instruments, institutions). Specific discussion of individual musical works can provide case studies but this approach raises questions about what kind of analytical writing suits this manner of project, as I will explore in this talk.
