SMA Pascall Medal 2021

The SMA is awarding an annual Pascall Medal, named in honour of the late Robert Pascall (1944-2018), reflecting his inestimable work in the discipline of music analysis. The prize will be awarded to any scholar from any country who is deemed to have made a highly significant contribution to analytically-based musicological research and/or the teaching of music analysis. It will consist of a personalised trophy, and the scholar awarded will be urged to give a keynote address at the SMA conference in the year following the awarding of the medal, for which free enrolment and accommodation will be provided. All SMA members are invited to nominate candidates (self-nominations are not permitted). Those who nominate should provide a 500-word assessment of the candidate’s contribution, ideally with copies of some key relevant publications (a maximum of three attached documents).

Nominations for the 2021 award should be submitted by Friday 6 August 2021, then the award will be decided by Friday 3 September 2021. The award winner will be notified in advance, and the award formally announced through online means.

Please send nominations together with a supporting statement and documents to admin@sma.ac.uk.

SMA Undergraduate Award 2021

To encourage and support work in the field of music analysis, the SMA is making an annual award for an outstanding contribution in this field produced by an undergraduate. Nominations are invited of the following type: a dissertation or extended essay (the major component of a single-credit undergraduate module) submitted at an undergraduate level at a UK institution during the 2020-21 academic year, which received a mark of 70% or more, and features music analysis as a prominent component. Nominations should be accompanied with a letter from a lecturer at the student’s institution confirming the mark received. The winning candidate will be given the option of presenting a paper at the 2022 SMA conference, with registration and accommodation paid for by the society, and to produce an article derived from the work which will be published in the SMA Newsletter. The award will be worth £100. Institutions/colleges can nominate a maximum of two candidates, and nominations must be submitted by Friday 3 September 2021.

We particularly encourage submissions from female finalist students.

Please send nominations (including candidate name, institution, and dissertation title) together with supporting documents to admin@sma.ac.uk.

All queries should be addressed to the Awards Officer, Dr Ian Pace, Reader in Music and Head of Department, City, University of London, at ian.pace.1@city.ac.uk.
