Constitution
The SMA is the UK’s leading organisation dedicated to music theory and analysis. We support and organise a regular programme of events, including the TAGS Weekend (our annual graduate student conference), the Music Analysis Summer School (a residential course taught by international experts), and Music Analysis Conferences (‘MACs’).
The SMA is interested in music theory in the broadest sense, encompassing critical theory, aesthetics, semiotics, music psychology, cognitive science, and music technology. We run themed conferences, such as the International Conference on Music & Emotion (Durham, 2009), and promote or co-organise events with other institutions, such as the study day, Musicology in the Digital Age (Senate House, 2010). We are also the UK hub for the regular series of European Music Analysis Conferences (‘EuroMACs’), the next one of which will be at the Conservatory of S. Cecilia, Rome (September 2011).
We publish a semi-annual Newsletter, and send regular mailings to our members about forthcoming events and developments. Members can subscribe to our flagship journal, Music Analysis, at a generously discounted rate.
If you have a passion for finding out how music works, and what it means, then the SMA is for you. We look forward to welcoming you to the next SMA event.
The SMA is a registered charity (no. 1168650). For further information about our governance, you can download our constitution here: SMA-Constitution-vsn-1.0.
