SMA Student and Early Career Travel Bursaries

A limited number of bursaries are available for existing student members of the Society and early-career members without access to institutional funding to cover travel expenses and accommodation for SMA conferences and events. Where the SMA offers free student accommodation for the conference/event, student members may apply for up to £75 towards their travel expenses; where the SMA does not offer free student accommodation for the conference/event, students may apply for up to £150 towards both travel and accommodation expenses. Preference may be given to UK students/ECRs living furthest from the conference venue.

Applications should include a short summary of the reasons for attendance, clearly state the sum requested, and include a draft budget. Applications should be sent to the Society’s Administrator, Dr James Savage-Hanford, at (administrator@sma.ac.uk) and should normally arrive no later than four weeks before the event, unless indicated otherwise in the Call for Papers. Applicants are expected to pre-book transport in advance of the event in order to secure the cheapest fares possible; if this is not feasible, the reason why should be given in the application.

Notification of the outcome of applications will occur within a few weeks of the application deadline. If successful, the bursary will be awarded on the production of receipts. Recipients of bursaries may be asked to write a short review of the event for the SMA website and/or Newsletter.
